The reality of living without
glasses is so compelling that the numbers of people requesting
laser vision correction and the number of doctors performing it
has exploded. People are so attracted to the concept of laser
vision correction that they often rush into the procedure with
an inadequate understanding of its risks and complications. In
our practice, I am most concerned that my patients make an informed
decision, that they understand the procedure and that they prepare
properly for the procedure so that I can minimize postoperative
problems.
To make sure patients
receive the highest standard of care, I insist that before having
the LASIK procedure my patients:
- Undergo a thorough evaluation
prior to surgery to determine the health of the cornea, lens
and retina, with screening for glaucoma and amblyopia.
- Understand the procedure
thoroughly.
- Remove their contact
lenses in enough time to allow their corneas to return to their
normal shape (one to six weeks depending on the type of lens
worn).
- Be evaluated completely
for signs of dry eye and or lid abnormalities so that we can
begin treatment for any problem prior to the procedure to reduce
or eliminate postoperative problems.
- Have their prescriptions
checked on multiple occasions to be sure the eyes have been
accurately measured.
- Who need or may soon
need reading glasses in addition to distance glasses, understand
monovision or the use of readers after surgery. This requires
an evaluation of each patient's individual lifestyle requirements.
